Hi beautiful people,

This post may come as unexpected but it has been on my mind for a while. Once I started my Masters Programme in UCD, I made a decision to engage in a healthy lifestyle even though I knew the masters would be full on. I was never a big fan of the Gym but fast forward six months , I actually miss it when I don’t go (well, sometimes!).

Success in the gym is very gradual and being consistent made me realise the value of doing things that is right consistently. The benefits of going to the Gym consistently in Uni reduced my coffee intake, I was more alert in class and I started to see physical results in my body. The Gym has also helped me to step out of my comfort zone and aim better. Below I will share some life lessons I have learnt from going to the Gym.

Dedication beats motivation

Developing a weekly routine and being dedicated to go to the Gym at least three times a week helped me in other areas of my life. I had to wake up at 6:00am so I wouldn’t be late for 9:00am lecture. I had no motivation but when I became dedicated to maintaining a certain standard for my body, all of a sudden there was motivation.

Threshold for discomfort is increased

I read an article which stated ‘Pain builds mental and physical toughness the way few other experiences can’ and I could relate. My sister would push me so hard in the Gym and this made me tougher. Experiencing the pains and discomfort the next day made me happy knowing I had done something right the day before. It is the same with some things that happen in our lives, we go through pain, hurts and tough times but we become better when we learn from our mistakes. I also went on a training session with a friend and as we set the timer and did squats, jumping jacks, burpees. She saw how much pain I was in but she would tell me to focus on the results instead of the process.

The Gym has contributed to my sense of self-improvement. I have learnt to try different equipment’s, I lift, learn, grow and repeat the process. I have also learnt to go at my own pace which is sometimes not the best because my mind could convince me that I have done enough and that is why I like going to the Gym with those who would push me to go harder.

This literally summarises my current mind set, surround myself with people who will push me to be a better version of myself.

Okay, so this is something I am still struggling with at the Gym. You know that saying if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. During my research on this topic, one thing a lot of the guys were saying is – when you don’t have tight structure or a plan, then you risk wasting time or being ineffective at the Gym. In order to perform at a high level, you need a proper plan

The gym helps you to recognise where you are improving and or being stagnant! The idea is to keep improving in anything we are dedicated to in life.

Thank you so much for staying till the end, let me know what life lessons you have learnt in the Gym. Don’t forget to catch me on my social media platforms on Instagram and Facebook, also Subscribe , Like and Share.
